LovageLevisticum officinalis P

A handsome plant, rather like a giant celery in appearance and flavour. A versatile and unique flavouring herb, but use sparingly, as it can dominate! Use leaves and young stalks in soups, stew, casseroles and most savoury foods. To make white sauce, add 1 tablespoon of fresh, finely chopped lovage to each 250 ml of milk. Or rub a leaf on chicken or around a salad bowl. Likes a rich, moist soil, in full sun or semi-shade. Part of the umbelliferae family, the flowers (up to 2 metres high) are a nectar source for parasitic wasps. Medicinal uses. 50-100 cm. WD.
