Source of cardamom seeds, the use of which dates to 4th Century BC. Ground seeds are used to spice fruit salads, curries, cakes, breads, biscuits and even coffee! Whole seeds are used to flavour marinades, liqueurs and mulled wines. Medicinally an infusion helps flatulence, indigestion and headaches. A tender perennial which grows from a fleshy root. Related to, and similar in appearance and habit, to ginger. Lance-shaped leaves will reach 1.8 – 3 m, with small, lower growing yellow flowers. Pick the green pods while still growing, and sun dry. Grow in moist, rich soil and protect indoors in colder climates. Many thanks to Bryan Sherman for growing these for us.

Basil

Basil’s Greek name ‘Basileus’, means ‘King’, indicating its royal position amongst herbs. The warm, spicy flavour of basil ‘sends cooks into poetic raptures’ and complements salads, most tomato dishes, egg plant, marrow, rice and mushrooms, to name only a few. Basil has a special affinity with tomatoes.

Plant them together in your garden. Basils are tender annuals, and grow best in a warm, sunny, sheltered position. Protect from frost, scorching and mid-day sun. Moist, rich, well-drained soil is preferred.

Celandine, GreaterChelidonium majusP

A forgotten herb which is still used in herbal medicine for inflammations of the biliary duct and gall bladder, such as gall stones. Use internally only under medical supervision. Fresh latex juice was formerly used on warts and corns. Branching stems of bright green, pinnate leaves, and single, 4-petalled, bright yellow flowers. 30 – 90 cm.

CHAMOMILE

Famed for Chamomile tea made from the flowers and used as a general tonic, sedative and as an aid to digestion. A hair rinse to lighten and condition fair hair can be made by boiling flowers for 20 minutes. Try an infusion in the bath to relieve sun or wind burnt skin, or a compress to reduce inflammation, eczema or ‘fatigue shadows’. Also valued for its sweet apple-scented leaves. Try a fragrant chamomile seat or a no-mow lawn.

Medium sized, golden daisy flowers yield a yellow-brown dye (shades of orange with chrome, and greenish brown with iron).

German ‘Bodegold’A
An improved strain of German Chamomile for commercial production. The large flowers, borne on sturdy, erect plants, contain up to 0.7% essential oil. They are high in bisabolol and other medicinal compounds.

Lawn Anthemis nobile ‘Treneague’P
For no-mow lawns! Lovely apple-scented non-flowering chamomile, very low-growing for a dense lawn or ground cover, or to use between paving stones. Depending on your budget – and your patience – you will need 6 – 10 plants per m2. The plants will divide into 5 – 6 rooted pieces, which should be planted 10 – 15 cm apart. Plant in well-drained, weed-free soil, and weed and water until established. Non-flowering, so it cannot be grown from seed.

Perennial. Traditional groundcover in English gardens and pathways, where it is cut like grass. Leaves are more aromatic than German chamomile.

Same lovely, aromatic leaves with double, pompom-like, yellow-centred, creamy white chamomile flowers on branching stems. The pretty flowers provide late season interest in the herb garden.
